Resident Evil was originally called Biohazard, in Japan. However, when it came to the United States, the name had to be changed because
there was a band here with the same name, and the threat of a lawsuit arose. The original Resident Evil was released in 1996, and after that came
Resident Evil: Director's Cut, an unedited version of the game, and Resident Evil: Director's Cut (Dual Shock Edition). The game was remade in 2002,
and most recently there was yet another version of it, very similar to the original, but with a few minor alterations, made for Nintendo DS, called
Resident Evil: Deadly Silence.
The original Resident Evil game had two playable characters, which you selected at the start: Jill Valentine, and Chris Redfield. Both characters
had certain strengths and weaknesses, and the game was meant to be a Survival horror. In my opinion the mood of the game was perfect. The barren walls of
the Mansion gave it a very empty, and eerie feel, and as you progressed through the Mansion you really did have to wonder what might be waiting for
you around every corner.
This was the game that started the whole thing. It was the game that started a series that is, in my opinion, one of the greatest series of games ever made.
Not to mention that in many ways, it paved the way for future horror games. And I personally thought it had an excellent storyline.
